Motorcycling - Picking The Right Bike - Part IV

Scooters, mopeds, Vespas... Whatever you call them, these smaller motorcycles still deserve to share the name of their larger cousins.

Not everyone needs the size of a touring bike, nor the speed of a motocross racer. Some people just want to get out on two wheels in the open air and enjoy the sunshine. Going where you want to go around town, getting maximum gas mileage and avoiding parking hassles, makes the choice of a smaller bike ideal.

Mopeds and scooters typically have smaller wheel rims than standard sized motorcycles. Since that isn't compensated for by raising the frame, ground clearance is less. But what would be a disadvantage in off-road circumstances is just what the scooter owner is looking for.

The term 'moped' is often reserved for smaller bikes, while 'scooter' designates a slightly larger, two-wheeled vehicle. Also, 'moped' originally meant a motorcycle with pedals attached. But the conventions are violated as often as they are observed, nowadays.

Between the low ground clearance, and the 'girl's bicycle'-style frame, getting on and off is a breeze for anyone old enough to legally ride one.

Engines are smaller on the more traditional moped, in the range of 50-150cc. The newer generation of scooters can have between 250cc and 650cc, though they may be heavier than desired at the top of the scale. Some scooters will reach speeds of 60mph, but 40mph is more common, and mopeds may be even slower.

Even the smaller engines may well have more than enough horsepower to suit the owner's needs, though. Modern engine designs have squeezed as much out of 50cc as would have required 150cc thirty years ago. That's helpful in those hilly cities, like San Francisco where a little more power is the difference between having the bike pull you versus you pushing the bike.

The bike typically weighs no more than 220lbs (100kg) and often less, with mopeds on the lower end of the scale. That makes either of them easy to maneuver with the engine turned off. It also means that, combined with the smaller engines, gas mileage is great. In an age of ultra-high gas prices, 70 miles per gallon looks very attractive.

Designed for short trips around town, you won't want to do any long distance driving with these smaller bikes. But getting in and out of parking lots is a breeze and you can almost always find a parking spot in the city.

Even with the small size, comfort has been kept firmly in mind in the design. Between the wide, plush seats and the ample fairing on scooters you won't suffer from excessive road feel or wind.

And most mopeds or scooters have integrated accessories that are often extra on standard bikes. Good-sized containers in the rear, electric starters up front, and automatic gear boxes in the middle make these a joy to own. Some even have electric motors.

The price for a smaller bike is often correspondingly smaller. While a good touring bike can run $12,000 to $20,000 or more, even a fully decked-out scooter will only be around $2,000. Retro Vespas and other scooters are often higher, though, around $4,500. Mopeds are commonly less than $1,000.

So, if your need for speed is a little less than your desire to just get around town in comfort and style, a moped or scooter may be just what you want.

Moped and Scooter Riders Take Care

Moped and Scooter owners know that they are a superb mode of transport for getting around in the city and urban areas. They are mainly very low powered so are an extremely cheap mode of transport. In Europe and particularly in the UK the moped and scooter is mainly owned by 16 to 20 year olds and are usually a stepping stone to a larger motorcycle.

There are also a lot of European countries such as Spain, France and Greece where you can hire a moped or scooter and need very little in the way of paperwork other than a driving license to hire it, however you tend to see the accident and emergency rooms at the local hospitals bugling with un-savvy motorcyclists who have misjudged the local roads and traffic.

Most moped's are limited to 35 mph yet it is common for teenagers to tune them so they can achieve high speeds and decibels. In the cities the noise can be deafening, especially in the tourist resorts where they pour out of the clubs at 5 in the morning and echo through the narrow streets.

If you are looking at moped and scooter brochures take your time and make a wish list of the specification and extras you would really like to have and then scour the internet and local dealers crossing off what you cant afford. You need to also bear in mind the legal moped and scooter age requirements of in the country you are living. The other option is to look at the classifieds as there are often bargains to be had as riders upgrade to larger bikes.

For any moped and scooter rider the one thing that should be considered first is insurance as there is a high chance that you will need it at some time make sure it is covered fully comprehensive for theft, damage and also for if you are involved in an accident. There are a few companies online who specialise in moped and scooter insurance.

Owning a moped or a scooter has a lot of advantages it gives you freedom from being stuck in long traffic jams, they are far more environmental friendly and they are extremely cheap to run in fact there are electric scooters now which cost as little as 0.3p per mile to run.

Safety is the biggest consideration for riders, make sure you purchase a decent helmet and don't ride in shorts and sandals in the summer as they offer no protection should you have a spill. Check your with your local police station as they will be ale to recommend a training school where you can be taught the correct way to ride and look after your moped and scooter

Electric Mopeds - Understanding What They Are

The term moped, taken from the words motor and pedal, gives rise to the thought of a machine having both a motor and pedals. In today's world of motorized two-wheel vehicles, sometimes this is true and sometimes not.

In the United States there is Federal Electric Bike Law HR 727, which defines an electric bike as having a motor less than 750 watts, having functional pedals, and not having a speed capable of more than 20 MPH. Other countries may have different definitions. So in today's market we see a breaking point between electric bicycles and electric mopeds.

Electric bikes, by classification rule, are confined to a limited power and speed, and with pedals, even though some of them look like a sleek and beautiful electric moped with the step through design and full fairings or shrouds. By contrast what is normally called a moped does not have a power or speed limitation.

In fact, we find today's industry and technology producing machines we normally call electric mopeds, entering the realm of real electric motorcycles. Even though they do not closely resemble a traditional motorcycle in appearance, with the step through design and their sleek streamlined beauty, they can be classed as a motorcycle because of their performance capabilities. With speeds of 65 MPH and a travel range of 90 miles per battery charge, these vehicles are competing well with motorcycles for fun and commuting.

The electric moped incorporates a motor in the hub of the rear wheel. Therefore it is direct drive, with no drive shaft or chain to deal with. The silent operation and no air pollution qualities are things of beauty in themselves.

Before getting into a discussion on efficiency and cost effectiveness, let's just declare that electric mopeds are now clearly a Girls Choice in two-wheel vehicles for a fun ride. Many women tend to be somewhat intimidated with a gas-powered unit because of the complexity, the mess, the potential problems and maintenance with them. Battery powered, electric motor driven mopeds eliminate almost all of those things. And with the modern good-looking designs, with dual ridership possible, any fun-loving girl, or boy, would be proud to own and drive a modern electric moped.

In stepping up from a bike to a moped, the costs go up too. But what do you want? If long-term savings and fun along the way are a goal, then a moped is a good choice. There are claims that e-mopeds or scooters could pay for themselves within a year with regular or daily use. No gas, oil, repairs, along with reduced car insurance rates for driving it less, all adds up. It is said that the X-treme model 5000Li has an efficiency equivalency of 250 MPG. This is one of the latest introductions to the electric moped market. Whatever formula is used, the local cost of electricity, along with the fast recharge capability of lithium-ion batteries and their long and lasting power output certainly has a lot to do with it. Are Mopeds Safe?

The above question is exactly the same I asked when I was about to enter an airplane for the first time in my life. I inquired, "Is this plane safe?" My friend, an experienced traveler, eased my anxiety. He told me that the majority of planes arrive safely to their destination. He concluded, "Accidents do happen, but they are the exception and not the rule". This would also be my answer to this question related to moped safety, except that, sometimes, by our carelessness, we make accidents the rule not the exception.

If you are thinking about buying a moped scooter and you haven't ridden one, it is normal to have certain level of anxiety. It is not unusual to have several areas of concern: Are there going to be unpleasant surprises along the way that would add more expenses, instead of saving me money? Do I risk more by driving a moped scooter than I risk driving other motorized vehicles? Is my moped going to fall apart quickly? If we are to be honest, any of those things can happen to you while you drive your electric or gas-powered moped. But, does it mean it has to happen? Does possibility necessarily means probability? I think not.

Back in 2001, when moped scooters were relatively new products in the United States, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission published a press release reporting an alarming statistic about scooter-related injuries, 2,250 in the first seven months of the year, to be exact. Yet, the same year, the U.S. Department of Transportation and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported 2,806 fatalities caused by full powered motorcycle crashes. This statistic does not even consider the total amount of accidents on that year, only the ones that had a fatal outcome. The point is not that driving mopeds poses fewer risks than a full power motorcycle, but that driving any kind of motorized vehicle has its risks. A moped is not necessarily a more dangerous artifact than cars, SUVs or motorcycles.

As the word suggests, accidents do happen, are not caused on purpose (at least most of the time), and occur when we least expect them. Some of them are unavoidable and some of them aren't. Fate sometimes plays a role in accidents. A lot of people have to suffer injuries, and even death, caused by other people's negligence or carelessness. When this happen, there is little you can do to avoid accidents. But the other side of the coin is that there are accidents that we can avoid. These are the ones we should be focused on preventing. Hereby, I offer some general guidelines that will help us prevent accidents while driving a moped scooter.

1. When buying a moped scooter one of your main concerns should be quality. I'm aware that in these days of economic scarcity, we must be careful not to overspend. But also, we must be careful not to sacrifice quality for a bargain. It is not wise to consider only the cost factor. There are really cheap mopeds on the market, but most of the time, the savings could be directly traced to the low quality of the material with which the scooter is built. You'll be hard pressed to find a cheap high quality moped scooter. If you want your moped scooter to last, focus on quality. Recognized and established brands are a bit more expensive, not because they necessarily want a bigger profit margin, but because they spend a lot of money on strict measures of quality control, warranties and after sale service, which translate in durability and safety. The savings come later in the long-lasting use of quality moped.

2. When driving a moped scooter, consider health factors. You want not to be guilty of driving a scooter with any severe physical or mental impairment. Driving a motorcycle requires the ability to maneuver with precision, react quickly, have a good range of vision and use common sense. Therefore, in order to protect yourself and others, especially if your impairment is produced by a recent surgery or injury, I strongly recommend having your doctor test you and clear you to drive a moped. In other circumstances, a driving test performed by your local Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) will suffice.

3. When driving a moped scooter, consider other limiting factors. There is no need to explain how alcohol, and other drugs in general, play an important role in traffic accidents. Age might be another limiting factor. Advanced age might mean that the reflexes needed to drive a speedy moped scooter safely are not adequate, even if local speed limits are respected. And driving too slow is not a good idea, since you could easily get run over. Additionally, emotions might impair your judgment when riding a moped. It is best not to go for a ride on you scooter if you are worried, anxious, angry o depressed. Intelligent drivers know their limits.

4. When it comes to riding a moped scooter, being safe is always better than being sorry. Do yourself a favor; find out what the legal requirements to drive a moped are in your local DMV. Part of those requirements, I suspect, will be to test your knowledge and abilities in order to qualify you for a moped driver's license. They will probably test you for road rules, road signs, driving, vision and hearing. If you want to be safe and legal, you'll be compelled to go to you local DMV and get one of their free instructional booklet that not only will prepare you for the test, but also, to be a safe moped driver. After all that's the ultimate goal of licensing. Some local agencies offer moped driving safety course. No one could tell how many lives these courses and tests have saved. Being legal and safe is the name of the game.

5. When jumping into a moped for a ride, always use courtesy and common sense. This is the essence of safe driving. Be on the alert of other vehicles and pedestrians. Dress appropriately for the ride (DOT-approved helmets have saved many lives). Ride alone, unless your moped has a seat for a second passenger. Obey the rules of the road. Do not make unnecessary moves on the city streets. Be ready for the unexpected. Avoid driving on uneven roads or through water puddles. Use hand signal before making a turn. Be especially cautious if you ride at night, when approaching intersections and at driveway entrances and exits. Safety deserves our best effort.

Are mopeds safe? They are as safe as the ones driving them. Somebody once said, "it's not the vehicle the cause of accidents and injuries; it is the operator that is driving them, and others that don't see them on the road and turn into them". If you ever want to avoid accidents altogether, then don't drive your moped. No moped was ever unsafe in the garage. But if you bought yours to use it, let it be known that you are taking some risks. And this guide, though not exhaustive, was written to help keep those risks to a minimum.

Let's Talk Mopeds

The word moped was coined by Swedish journalist Harald Nielsen in 1952.

The earliest mopeds, introduced in the early 1950s, were standard bicycles with a helper motor in various locations, for example on top of the front wheel; they were also called cyclemotors.

Mopeds are restricted to 30-75 mph (48-121 km/h) and may not exceed 30 mph (48 km/h) in the UK. Also in the UK a provisional licence, full motorcycle or car licence is needed to operate a moped. A "Compulsory Basic Training" (CBT) certificate is also required to ride a moped on public roads.

Many mopeds are equipped with reflectors and other accessories that makes them more visible in the street especially in the dark.

Some mopeds are restricted by simple means, such as plates or washers which some remove to increase speed, some dealerships will de-restrict a moped for free or at a small charge. The speed gained by such modifications depends on the specific engine and also the combination of modifications performed.

The problem with riding tuned mopeds by teens in countries where their top speed and/or engine capacity has to be limited can make riding one punishable as driving without a license, so be warned, police have now increased the number of surprise checks in schools and teenager hot spots to help cut down on the problem.

A moped is usually powered by small 2-stroke or 4-stroke engines ranging from 50 cc to 125 cc.

In most countries mopeds are subject to all of the same traffic laws as other vehicles, and all riders must wear helmets.

Some advantages of owning a moped are low purchase costs with some models costing only a few hundred dollars. Road tax is much cheaper than a motorcar, gas/fuel consumption is very much lower than a motorcar with some models running up to 220 miles (350 km) on one tank of fuel.

With many mopeds now styled to look like motorcycles this may encourage inexperienced riders to act as if they were operating such a machine, sometimes bringing it into situations or expecting performance it is not capable of negotiating such as attempting to ride a moped at a high speed. This can increases the risk from automobile drivers who may think a moped is a motorcycle and misjudge its speed.

Motorcycles, Scooters, and Mopeds at Auto Auctions

This economy is going to the dogs. This is a phrase I'm sure we've all heard. People have to choose between gas and groceries. Gone is the quick trip to the general store everyday, to pick up that last thing we forgot. We make lists of all the things we need and make one trip to get it all. The things we forget, we learn to do with out. Today, it's hard to find anyone who isn't struggling with the growing gas prices. There is hope in the fact that, through out history, we have adapted, learned to deal with the rise and fall of the economy.

Today, people have found ways around this latest crisis. Many people are trading in their new vehicles for older more fuel efficient ones. Some are selling their new cars and trucks and buying motorcycles. Motorcycles can be more fuel efficient. Scooters and mopeds are also popular, they would be great for the quick trip for something that you can't do without, but can't afford the gas to make a long trip to get it. The fuel efficient motorcycles, scooters, mopeds could be our way of dealing with this crisis. More and more people are switching to motorcycles. They are also saving money by giving up the payments of their gas hogs.

Sad that our economy forces us to make these sacrifices. No one wants to pay payments and insurance on a brand new SUV or luxury car that they can't even afford to drive. How will you adapt to this crisis? Is trading in your car for a more fuel efficient one the answer for you? Are you thinking about buying a motorcycle? What about a minivan? Compared to the SUV do minivans get better mileage?

With so many Americans giving up their high payments for better mileage, there are a lot of repossessions going on. The number of repo's are growing on a daily basis. After these vehicles get repossessed they then get turned over to an auction, people can then buy them there very cheaply. There are also police auctions where you can buy government seized vehicles. There are many makes and models of these vehicles at auctions. Among them, you will probably find a variety of motorcycles, from BMW motorcycles, Kawasaki, Yamaha, Kymco and Triumph, motorcycle motors and parts. The variety of scooters may likely include Rascal, Vespa, and Tank scooters, also parts, motors and accessories. At an auto auction you will find motorcycles, scooters, mopeds, minivans, cars, trucks, SUV and more. They make these auction sites hard to find, many people don't even know about them. The difficulty in finding them is yet another thing we'll have to deal with.

There are places that can help you find out every thing you need to know about auto auctions. They have auto auction listings for every state. They also have several listings for just about any make and model of vehicle. Everything is organized neatly to make it even easier. These vehicles can be inspected by you, before the sale. At some auction sites they provide you with detailed information about the vehicle your interested in. These vehicles can truly be bought legally for pennies on the dollar. Government auto auctions are still a little known secret. With the ever rising cost of gas, will buying a motorcycle at an auto auction be a possible solution for you?

Motorcycle Accidents Vs Moped Accidents

When comparing motorcycle accidents with moped accidents, there are some key similarities and discrepancies. For instance, as with motorcycle accidents, head injuries have been less common with moped accidents since the implementation of a helmet requirement. But still, moped accidents are by no means harmless. While moped safety regulations and registration laws have saved a countless number of lives, the risk of injury during an accident remains high.

Similarities and Differences in Moped and Motorcycle Accidents

There are plenty of similarities between moped accidents and motorcycle accidents, although motorcycle accidents are known to cause more severe injuries. Many experts consider moped accidents to have as great a potential for danger since both of these vehicles leave the operator similarly exposed to the dangers of the road.

Motorcycles tend to be heavier and go at faster speeds, which in an accident can cause more damage and injury to the operator. Mopeds, alternatively, have smaller tires that can be more easily deflected, which make them more susceptible to pot holes in the road.

The most frequent cause of moped accidents is collisions with other cars, while motorcycles tend to overturn more often or have accidents as a result of losing control of the motorcycle, which can cause the vehicle to run off the road or highway.

What to Do After a Massachusetts Moped Accident

If you have been injured in a Massachusetts moped accident, the first thing to do is call the police, and make sure that everyone involved in the crash receives the necessary medical treatment. When the police take your statement, be honest, but be sure to say as little about the accident as possible, because anything you say can be used as evidence in a Massachusetts court of law.

Instead, gather whatever evidence you can, and call a Massachusetts personal injury attorney. An attorney will listen to your story, and if you have a legitimate claim, may proceed with a personal injury lawsuit.

How Much Compensation Can I Receive From a Personal Injury Lawsuit?

There are several factors that can determine the value of your personal injury lawsuit. The best way to understand the value of your accident claim is to speak with a Massachusetts personal injury attorney. The value of your compensation will most likely be determined by the damage to your vehicle, your medical expenses, any pain and anguish that you may have suffered, and any future income you will lose as a result of your personal injuries.

Advice Guide Tips To Buying The Perfect Gas Saving Moped Or Scooter For You!

So, you want to start saving some serious amounts of cash over the next year or two on your mode of transport? Many thousands of people, just like you are coming to the same conclusion. They realize like you, that it is much more important to keep up with their mortgage payments, hence keeping a roof over the heads of the family, rather than pouring needless amounts of money down the drain, by driving a gas guzzling, money eating large car or automobile that only returns a few miles to the gallon. Or maybe you are a younger individual that just wants to keep as much money for themselves as possible?

You know that many of the short trips that you do around your city end up costing you more than you would like to admit. It's starting to worry you too, where all of this talk of recession will lead. You want to start making savings right now. Making savings IS making money, right? You realize that this is being prudent and shrewd, saving money for a rainy day so to speak, to spend in other ways rather than giving it to the fat cat oil corporations etc.

The question however remains, what are the alternatives? How can I still get around, running my errands etc, whilst too saving a considerable amount of money per month that I could save and put towards my mortgage or other urgent bills, or just spend on myself? Is there a viable solution for me that works without fail? Yes there is!

Maybe it's time to consider buying either a new or used gas powered moped or scooter. Think about it sensibly and you just might reach the conclusion, like many other thousands of people across North America, that it really is a very sensible option. Certainly the idea of achieving up to 100 miles per gallon over a measly 20 miles per gallon is a very attractive prospect for you and many others just like you. $5 of gas in a scooter or moped would likely pay for you to carry out all of your errands for a whole week, compare this against how much it costs you by your present mode of transport and I'm sure you will agree the savings really can be quite considerable, come the end of the month.

So, you realize it makes sense? Now, the question is, which moped or scooter should I buy?

Certainly you need to take a few things into consideration, not least of all the terrain in your local area and dare I say it, your height and build too. It's no good buying a very small powered moped if you are quite a large individual and there are plenty of hills where you live. Too, if it is a very small moped or scooter and you are like me, very tall at 6'6", you want to make sure that your long legs do not touch the handlebars of the moped or scooter as you are riding along. You need to bear safety in mind at all times. So think carefully first, before just rushing in to what seems to be the best deal. If you are like me, built quite well and you want to buy a moped or scooter to save money on gas as opposed to constantly driving a car for all those short trips around town, consider buying a slightly higher powered moped or scooter, even a small motorcycle. Thinking, planning ahead will ensure that the moped or scooter that you buy is a lot more reliable and dependable in the long run, and will save you still, lots of on gas.

It's no good overburdening a smaller engine, simply to scream the guts out of the thing every time you go up an incline. What you want is a moped or scooter that can convey you effortlessly and in the safest manner possible, so that you can concentrate fully on the road conditions presenting themselves in front of you. If you buy wisely, there is still no reason why you shouldn't be able to achieve quite incredible returns on the miles per gallon.

Of course, if you are of average build then you won't have these worries and it might well be that a smaller engined moped or scooter will fit your needs just perfectly. Generally speaking these smaller engines start at just 50cc and although this might sound tiny, you'll still be conveyed at around, give or take a little bit, about 30mph (80-100 plus mpg). If you go up a notch, a few more cc horsepower, 70-80hp, you should get around 45-50mph and still get around 70-80mpg. Buying something up to 125cc will, depending on the model, convey you very easily at the speed limits in most states and still give you awesome miles per gallon by return, hurting your pocket hardly at all, when compared to your present four wheeled transport. It's only at the end of the month, when you can compare the stats side by side that you can instantly realize the great amounts of money that you can save. This article really could inspire you to save many, many dollars!

With the wind in your face, the sunshine beating down, what better way to get around town, dodging all of those traffic jams and saving not just shed loads of money on gas, but being kinder to the environment too? Mopeds and scooters today are being considered more and more as the cool way to get around, with sales this past month jumping up by an extraordinary 180% partly due to the ever increasing escalating gas prices at the pump. So check out the options, choose your manufacturer, decide whether you want to go for new or used, if the latter, check out the Vespas, they are way cool with their retro good looks, then think about what size engine you need to convey you effortlessly and safely, whilst giving you a maximum number of miles per gallon and before you know it, you'll be saving yourself lots and lots of money. It is your money, why give it to the oil companies when you can put your own money to other good uses for yourself instead? Buy a moped or scooter and you can do just that!

However, if both of you own a Yamaha, chances are your insurance rates are kind of similar.

Brand of the motorcycle is another factor that influences the calculation of the insurance rates. Yamaha Motorbike Insurance quotes seem to be similar with one another.

If you are getting a Yamaha Motorcycle Insurance, you have to go to the right place. You may own a motorcycle, moped, or scooter.

Whatever you have, as long as it bears the Yamaha insignia, then you can go and apply for a Yamaha Motorcycle Insurance.

Insurance companies have made businesses out of getting the best possible quotes for their clients. But of course, they do not disregard the factors that would determine your motorcycle insurance rate.

After checking the brand which is Yamaha, they will also check your age. Notice that females who are below 21 have higher insurance rates than a man in his mid-40s. This is because the former is more prone to accidents.

They would also look at your driving experience. If you had an accident before involving motorcycles or any vehicles for that matter, this would mean a slightly higher insurance rate compared to a person who has not had any road accidents.

You have to understand that insurance companies should prepare for the possibilities of insuring your property.

Once a pattern has been established, they will just secure their funds by giving you a slightly higher Yamaha Motorcycle Insurance.

And if you can do so, negotiate rates with Yamaha insurers. Make the decision on what kind of insurance you are looking for before you actually go and buy insurance. Be knowledgeable on the questions that they would ask you so that you have enough time to think of your answers.
